Bitumen Waterproofing Methods

Basement walls are coated with bitumen and the purpose if water proofing. When you want to water proof your basement walls you need to apply hot bitumen coating on your walls because water cannot penetrate through bitumen and bitumen goes in the pores and close them. The same procedure was used in one of the houses in DHA Lahore. It was a 2 kanal house and three coatings of hot liquid bitumen were applied on the plastered surfaces of RCC retaining walls. Bitumen applied was a mixture of 80/100 and 10/20. These are the penetration grades. After applying bitumen polyethylene sheets were also placed on the walls. This whole procedure was captured and shared in the following video.

Bitumen Membranes or Geo Membranes or APA Membranes are also used in place of hot liquid bitumen these days. Application procedure of Bitumen membrane is also shown in the video. Allumunium foil can also be seen on the outer surface of bitumen membrane. Butane torch was used to melt the bitumen membrane so that it could stick to the wall. Overlapped regions were closed bu applying pressure. Cost of both methods is also shown in the video. There can be some questions from your side feel free to ask in comments.
